What a bar chart does best

Bar charts excel when you have a single metric and you want to rank entities by it — revenue per region, signups per month, tickets per agent. The eye is great at comparing the length of parallel bars, so differences as small as a few percent are easy to read.

Use a bar chart when: the question is 'who is biggest?', there's only one measure that matters, and you have more than ~10 entities to compare. Bar charts also scale beautifully — 50 bars are still readable, where 50 axes on a radar chart would be unreadable noise.

What a radar chart does best

Radar charts (also called spider charts) plot 4–10 measures on axes that radiate from a center point. The shape you trace tells you the balance — is this candidate well-rounded, or spiky? Is this product strong on price but weak on support?

Use a radar chart when: the question is 'what's the profile?', you have 4–10 comparable measures on the same scale, and you want to overlay 1–4 entities to compare shapes. Skills assessments, product or competitor comparisons, SWOT, performance reviews and customer-segment profiles are all classic radar use cases.

Decision rule of thumb

If your data fits in a single column, use a bar chart. If it fits in a small table (rows = entities, columns = attributes, all on the same scale), use a radar chart. If you find yourself making 6 bar charts side-by-side to compare the same 6 metrics across 3 products, you actually want one radar chart.

The trap is overlap: stacking more than ~4 entities on a radar chart turns the shapes into spaghetti. If you need more, switch to a small-multiples grid of radar charts, or fall back to a heatmap.
