The anatomy of a spider chart

Every spider chart has three parts. The axes (one per attribute, all sharing the same scale) radiate from the center. The grid lines (concentric rings) mark intervals on those axes so the eye can estimate values. The polygons (one per entity) connect that entity's values across every axis, usually with a translucent fill so overlapping shapes stay readable.

Read the chart by looking at shape first, values second. A round shape close to the outer ring means an entity is strong and well-rounded; a spiky shape with deep dents shows clear strengths and weaknesses.

When a spider chart is the right pick

Spider charts shine for: skill or competency assessments (self vs manager vs peer), product or competitor comparisons across the same feature set, SWOT analyses, KPI dashboards with a small fixed set of metrics, and customer or persona profiles. The common thread: 4–10 comparable measures on the same scale, and 1–4 entities you want to compare visually.

Common mistakes to avoid

Three things kill a spider chart. First, mixing scales — if one axis goes 0–10 and another 0–100, the polygon shape is meaningless. Normalize first. Second, too many entities — beyond 3 or 4 overlaid polygons, the chart turns into spaghetti. Toggle entities off, or split into a small-multiples grid. Third, too many axes — 12+ attributes make every axis tiny and labels collide. Group related attributes into fewer composite scores instead.
